P. tetragonum has strange long stems that are square in cross-section. The plant may grow up to a couple of metres high if it has support. The four petals are white and the two top ones have beautiful maroon markings.
The long jointed stems break easily and in its natural habitat the pieces will form roots where they fall on the ground.
